Inside Out – Thinking Through Materials

Welcome to the All Access AUB digital exhibition, a collaborative project between TheGallery and AUB's Access and Participation team.

about the exhibition

Now in its third year, the All Access AUB programme welcomed a group of Year 12 students over the summer to give them a taste of what it's like to be a student and study a creative course at AUB. Students took part in a diverse range of workshops where they were encouraged by AUB tutors to explore and experiment with different mediums to develop their skills and portfolio of work.

They explored personal responses to the theme "Inside Out – Thinking Through Materials", entering and

discovering their own journeys, using a range of materials, ideas and imagination. The resulting work reflects the high quality of the students' engagement, tenacity and creativity within a very short and intense few days, which we're delighted with and grateful for.

The All Access AUB exhibition showcases this explorative and experimental work, highlighting and celebrating their creative talents and curious minds.

PRESSURES: WOMEN

2023, biro drawing, collage

The piece is inspired by the way in which our society puts pressure on individuals. The hunched figure drawn in fineliner is representing how women have a breaking point and that this is causing burnout. The texture also represents the chaos in women's lives. The cloud of collage is made up of text and images that influence the pressures put on women to create a home and children.

PRESSURES: Men

2023, biro drawing, collage

The piece is inspired by the way in which our society puts pressure on individuals. The hunched figure drawn in fineliner is representing how men have a breaking point and that this is causing burnout. The texture also represents the chaos in men's lives. The cloud of collage is made up of text and images that influence the pressures put on men to hide their emotions leading to mental health issues.

Aliesia

spark

2023, charcoal on cartridge paper

Aliesia drew her work based on the feeling of an object which she couldn't see, so it no longer is an object but rather lots of feelings. Aliesia wanted to express the textures and shapes that she felt, and the emotions that she experienced.

colour

2023, paper, card and wire

The 3D drawing is an extension of Aliesia's 2D drawing. She used card, paper and thread wire to describe the simplicity, enabling the viewer to look at feelings from different angles, in 3D.

Ash

radiator pipe 3

2023, collograph

Ash's artwork, 'Radiator Pipe 3', uses cardboard, wire and hot glue to portray a radiator pipe.

chelsea

artist block

2023, mixed media collage with monoprinting

Demoralisation leads to a block. Anything she does, she is blocked. But only when she closes her eyes she understands the block is art.

boneless structure

2023, mixed media with cardboard,

brown paper, green thread and white card

Although the piece is quite empty, the green adds a reassuring touch. The warm colours mean a cosy atmosphere even though the structure seems to accommodate no one.

Daisy

market value

2023, mixed media collage, monoprint, water-based paint and printed paper on sugar paper

Daisy chose to explore what women's bodies are to society, the value that the wider public have assigned to beauty, and how women only have value if they are beautiful. Bodies are used for marketing and treated as commodities. This will not change.

Dan

shaped by confliction

2023, graphite on cartridge paper

Dan's artwork, 'Shaped by Confliction', highlights the thought process of someone who may be struggling with mental health problems such as anxiety, shown by the overlapping of shapes. The emphasis of the rigid, hard lines and edges could be interpreted as someone feeling trapped or constricted by how they are or are not coping inside their head.

A conflicted mind

2023, mixed media collage, card and paper

Dan's artwork, 'A Conflicted Mind', highlights the thought process of someone who may be dealing with anxiety or depression, or perhaps someone who is overthinking a situation. Dan specifically chose certain words to represent things that may cause an unsettled mind, or floating around on a daily basis. Dan also used some transparent materials to emphasise that not everything in this person's mind is clear and visible. This influenced the overlaping of the materials and other prints in the piece.

Dayana

Safe 6:8

2023, mixed media collage, plastic, paper, string and acrylic paint

Dayana's artwork, 'Safe 6:8', discusses topics of safe places and how these vary according to different people. Some people find safety in a place, such as a room, house, home country, or in other things such as their religion, in God, in their presence, or even in objects. Regardless of the place they feel safe, it's all about how they perceive it and find comfort and peace within it. Dayana's work is inspired by the Bible scripture in Matthew 6:28. Dayana's faith plays a big role in how she feels at peace and who she is. In a safe, peaceful place, she can trust God will take good care of her, just as He did with the lilies.

Delal

untitled

2023, charcoal, wire, tracing paper and graphite

During the progression of Delal's piece, she was reminded of a face, which then inspired the topic of Psychology. The piece reflects feelings of being overwhelmed, which is represented by the wires.

elenna

blue yeti

2023, paper, water-based paint, ink and embroidery thread

Elenna's collage and mix media piece takes inspiration from Blue Yeti mushrooms.

Untitled

2023, graphite on cartridge paper

Elenna's drawing was done from memory. The artwork was created using graphite, taking inspiration from the original subject matter of a bundle of sticks.

ella-sophia

untitled

2023, cardboard triangles with coloured threads

Taking shapes from 3D process work, Sophia has created a triangular abstract structure held together with string to create a spontaneous sculpture.

nomadic

2023, collage on brown paper with red thread

Sophia's artwork, 'Nomadic', showcases collage in its simplistic ways, taking the artist Rosemary Rae into consideration. Sophia focused on applying Rae's simplistic details to her work.

Finley

ink blots

2023, monoprinted sugar paper with water-based paint

This work was inspired by Edgar Degas, which has a 1970s feel that inspired the piece. Finley is interested in comic artists, one of which being Belkis Ayon. This work is a collograph with textures, ink blotches, and patterns.

sinuate lines

2023, monoprinted sugar paper with water-based paint

The inspiration for this work was Edgar Degas as his work is very dark, noir like and edgy. Finley has an interest in illustration, primarily in comic arts. Finley's influence for his work is Camille Pissarro, who works with textured monoprint, shapes, and lines to give a dark and creepy vibe.

florence kay

the spirals under the skin

2023, painted with wire and blue thread

Florence's piece is made with metal wires, a cardboard stand, a small piece of black card and blue cotton string, which represents chaos. The piece as a whole portrays that while many may look perfect on the surface, they all have their own spiralling problems under their skin, and it shows that not one person can exist without both.

eternally stitched together

2023, mixed media collage with white monoprinting ink on black card and stitched black and white thread

This collage piece has been created using collographing and stitching techniques. For Florance, it represents the inability to live in a completely perfect world. Life would not be truly lived without a balance of all things good and bad.

Freya

me and the birds

2023, collage and mixed media

Freya has experimented with collage by cutting out images from manga-zines and repurposing them into a new image.

who am i?

2023, digital painting

This image by Freya potrays the internal struggle of gender dysphoria. The boy is trying to figure out who he really is, while being stressed out over what society may think of him if he decides to be who he wants. The girl represents who he really wants to be and his future self.

untitled

2023, collage

This collage piece is inspired by modern architecture.

ghaith

monoprint

2023, monoprint

Monoprinting is a printmaking technique that produces unique images from a plate with ink or paint, resulting in one of a kind prints. The monoprint created by Ghaith is linked to experimenting with blindly feeling objects.

HANNAH

the crack in the screw

2023, wire, modroc and acrylic paint on cardboard

Hannah created the piece using modroc in order to make her work stand out and to create the desired texture. The work is painted gold to make the it blend together into one piece. The shapes she has created are intended to draw the eye downwards.

Jack

Viti Rampicanti

2023, curved wire wrapped in thread on cardboard

Jack's piece began by testing the gravity of the wire and making it into a 3D piece. During the creation of this piece, Jack enjoyed sculpting the lines and decided to get some string to stretch across and wrap around the neighbouring sections like vines.

JADA

circswirl

2023, string, wire and cardboard

Jada's artwork was inspired by the outline of a rainbow. Jada layered wires following these shapes, then threaded over the wire with string. With many of Jada's pieces including swirls, she decided to add swirls to fit the theme, which then inspired the title, 'Circswirl' – circle and swirls.

stick disaster

2023, graphite on cartridge paper

Jada did this piece based on an object that she could feel but not see. She assumed the item she was feeling was a bundle of sticks, so she drew them out based on the textures, the pricking and the wire holding them together.

dead energy

2023, charcoal

This was inspired by Jennifer's piece 'Dead Energy Drawing', creating the piece in 3D form. It represents the dead energy of a plug with a spark of life in the middle.

jennifer

dead energy drawing

2023, charcoal

Jennifer did her piece based on an object she could feel but not see. She felt a hard, triangular object with three protruding pieces. From this, she felt inspired to draw a dark plug with no energy, except in the centre.

joshua

Experimental Chain Print

2023, print (ink)

Inspired by a series of experimental projects, Joshua's work started as a 3 dimensional piece of crochet which was pulled taught on a cardboard frame. However, after experimenting with collographs, he decided to develop the artwork further, making a print from it.

kaitlyn

caged in

2023, wire

Kaitlyn's artwork, 'Caged In', displays themes of shutting away your heart and always listening to your head instead. This sculpture shows a physical representation of this and suggests that by not listening to your heart, you are locking away a piece of yourself.

kayzie

surfaces

2023, collage with drawing and brown thread

Kayzie loves figure drawing, as well as the textures and playing with different surface qualities. She enjoys building up those textures and layers which she associates with ballet tutus, adding a pencil drawing to the collage. She incorporates thread as it brings contrast, structure and tension to the work.

Inside-Out

2023, embroidery thread on paper

Inspired by her monoprint and drawing, this piece represents the feeling of inside-outside-veins. A bag was used to communicate the inner-outer feelings that inspired the artwork.

alleviate

2023, charcoal and embroidery on cartridge paper

Lita's artwork, 'Alleviate', portrays a sense of gloom by the absence of colour.

Lita

monochrome

2023, collage using graphite, acrylic paint and printed paper

Lita's artwork, 'Monochrome', has a variation of textures and shapes with a distant colour pallet.

michael

drill series finale

2023, paper

Michael's work is based on one of his past drawings of feeling. Michael crumpled white paper and used it in the centre of the work to create the texture he felt. Lighting the sculpture under a spotlight to take a picture, he was amazed by the shadows the piece produced, due to how they stood out and contrasted the white cardboard. After observing this, he felt that leaving the piece open was a good choice, as it helped to achieve these shadows.

moria

tell me how you feel

2023, mixed media printmaking, charcoal, acrylic paint and threads

Moria's artwork, 'Tell Me How You Feel', discusses themes of frustration, a sense of confusion and the unknown. This piece was inspired by the emotions of confusion, anger and annoyance whilst attempting to draw blind.

nas

untitled

2023, newspaper collograph printed in red

The term polysemic means to have multiple meanings and readings. These meanings can be both literal and personal. This piece doesn't exist as a way to communicate meaning. It exists to involve narrative in your head.

oleksandra

the tea bag

2023, 3D sculpture, mixed media,

wire, threads and cardboard

Oleksandra's work, 'The Tea Bag', symbolises garbage and the infinity of garbage that people leave around themselves. Although almost all people have started sorting garbage, even now the streets of England are dirty. This is really a problem for our planet. All animals suffer from garbage. Oleksandra chose these colours because they convey the colour of garbage. The piece was originally inspired by feeling a tea bag but Oleksandra decided to separate the origin of the artwork to reflect how she has been separate from Ukraine due to the conflict.

paige

exploration

2023, wire

This piece involves Paige pushing her own personal skills, as a 3D model incorportating studied shapes felt unfamiliar to her. Through the process, Paige discovered that the formation of lines and shapes felt like a liberating change from drawing flat, 2D shapes. To reflect this, Paige used shapes to create a figure representing this new-found sense of exploration.

band

2023, modroc and tissue paper

Phoebe's artwork 'Band', uses tissue paper and modroc which is wrapped around wire. The structure shows how the spines are trying to flee the constraints of the uneven mass below, taking stylistic inspiration from artist, Sasha Vinci. Phoebe uses protruding spines, all in one direction, to create dynamic movement, showing how all together the spines are trying to escape and be free.

phoebe

tightly bound

2023, charcoal on cartridge paper

Phoebe's artwork, 'Tightly Bound', showcases a bundle of twine. The drawing expands outwards from the rope constraints. Phoebe uses charcoal and graphite in dynamic strokes to show how the twine is rigorously trying to escape the clutches the paper restraints.

sasha

untitled 1

2023, charcoal and paint

In this piece, Sasha has taken the use of shapes and enhanced them by blending charcoal around it to create a sense of depth and darkness.

untitled 2

2023, hessian fabric and charcoal on cartridge paper

In this piece, Sasha has used cut-outs of squares and coloured them in charcoal, then used a paint brush and roller on the background to create a blotchy effect.

sean

bad batch ruins the hatch

2023, modroc

This piece highlights the corruption of the upper class and how this evil vestige of greed and power begins to overcrowd and consume the working class. The last remaining 'innocent' is being circled, entrapped, and preyed upon by it's counterparts. The purpose for the head is to represent our souls as a collective and how our "soul" is incapacitated under the weight of corruption, greed and consumption brought on by the oligarchs who infect society with their capitalist practices and ideologies.

tetiana

inside

2023, card, string and tissue paper

This 3D model shows the emotions and feelings we experience as we develop. Rectangles symbolise the feeling of hopelessness, as if you are stuck in a closed space. The paper on the rectangles symbolises depression and crumpledness. This, accompanied with the thread, represents entanglement in oneself. The colours show that it is not scary and that after all these stages, a bright future conquers all else.

untitled

2023, mixed paper, charcoal and water-based paint

This piece was based on the idea of self-development, and maintaining who you are as a person whilst striving for everything new and modern. It reflects the importance of remembering where you come from and our history, as if we allow this to happen, we could lose ourselves entirely. This collage depicts a combination of the past and present, showing that our past and future selves can live harmoniously, no matter how your life changes. In pursuit of the eternal, always remember who you are.

valentina

untitled

2023, charcoal and fineline pen

Valentina created this piece by touching an object that she could not see. The contact she made with the thick metal of the object unconciously made her think of thicker lines. The piece reflects the thought process of creating texture onto the paper rather than considering what the object could be. This sensory exercise allowed her to have more creative freedom.
